Learning to Drive
Before learning to drive you will need:
· To be 17 years old or older *
*Age 16 if you are currently getting Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component)
· A provisional driving licence. You can apply up to three months before your 17th birthday.
Apply by post by getting a D1 form from the post office and sending this off to the DVLA in Swansea. Click here for more info.
Application can be done online at Direct.gov
· Instruction. We recommend professional instruction, but you can also practise in another vehicle if:
o You are accompanied by someone who is at least 21 yrs of age and has held a full licence for at least 3 yrs.
o You display ‘L’ plates visibly on the front / rear of the car.
(‘L’ plates should be removed when the learner is not driving).
o You are covered by insurance for that car.
· Remember, to get a full licence, you need to pass both your theory and your practical tests. You will need to pass your theory test before you apply for your practical test so you should start learning the theory as soon as possible. You cannot sit the theory test until you have your licence but you may start to learn as early as you like.
See the links above for more info on these tests and how GB School of Motoring can help
